Campaign events were canceled in Iowa, where Republican presidential candidates have less than a week before the state’s first-in-the-nation caucuses. Powerful winds in Washington, D.C., and surrounding areas diverted Air Force Two, in which Vice President Kamala Harris was traveling, to a different airport. Schools had also closed in Florida, Georgia and other parts of the South on Tuesday, but many were reopening today. Many schools in the Midwest, including in Iowa, Michigan and Missouri, were closed on Wednesday. Several school districts in the United States either canceled classes or planned to open late on Wednesday. Calmer conditions were expected across the South on Wednesday. Severe thunderstorms and apparent tornadoes ripped across the Southeastern United States on Tuesday, leaving at least four people dead. High wind warnings are also in effect for many areas near the coast and in higher terrain of the Northeast, where gusts could be over 50 miles per hour.
